Ambient

The Ambient paintings are based on encounters with the space, atmosphere, light and architecture in locations where I’ve traveled on this continent and abroad.

Since moving to New Mexico in 2014, the region’s vast skies, dramatic seasonal changes, plant life and open landscape have also influenced my work. The paintings arise from my impressions of atmosphere, structure and place, translated into formal, geometric compositions that reduce specific detail into intervals of layered, saturated color.

I use the properties of fluid paint to make visual representations of experiential, sensory phenomena, like vibration, radiance, a sense of expanding or dissolving space. I feel these paintings are successful when they evoke  stillness and contemplative states in people who view them.
