Tantra

The Tantra series fuses my ongoing meditation practice with my studio work, using abstract formal language to capture different internal states and experiences.

In developing these paintings, I reference motifs—like the floral “chakra flower” shapes, or grids—from traditional Tantric diagrams or from mathematics. I paint lines and forms into wet grounds, then brush out and re-paint them until they begin to take on a blurred, vibratory character, suggesting forms rising out of and dissolving into an energetic field.

The palette in this series is muted and diffuse to convey the quiet, contemplative experience of deep meditation. It’s my hope that the compositions serve as a threshold, evoking for the viewer the sensations of dissolving or expansion that often occur in meditation practice.
