Fields
I use similar approaches to make the Veil paintings and the Field paintings: floating bands of fluid oil paint into wet grounds, then working with additive and subtractive process to shape the final compositions.
The colored Fields suggest an infinite space extending beyond the plane of the canvas, and evoke phenomena in the physical world: the atmospheric qualities of weather, shifting light, seasonal alterations in the landscape.
They’re literal records of staying present to work cooperatively with the material qualities of paint. The imagery they might imply arises completely out of process, yet they are informed by careful observation.
In the Fields , the Veils, and the Lattices, I’m drawing a direct correlation between meditation practice, observation and process.
